What Is Limescale and Why Does It Matter?
Limescale is a chalky white deposit made up mainly of calcium carbonate. It forms whenever hard water is heated, gradually building up inside kettles, coffee machines, steam irons, and other water-using appliances. Over time, limescale reduces heating efficiency, slows performance, affects the taste of drinks, and can ultimately cause heating elements to fail prematurely.
The good news: descaling is simple, inexpensive, and takes less than 30 minutes.
What You'll Need
- White vinegar or a commercial descaling solution (citric acid-based products work well)
- Fresh water
- A cloth or sponge
- A measuring jug
Descaling a Kettle
- Make your descaling solution: Fill the kettle halfway with equal parts white vinegar and water. Alternatively, dissolve one to two tablespoons of citric acid in water.
- Boil and soak: Boil the kettle, then let the solution sit for 20–30 minutes. This softens and loosens the scale deposits.
- Empty and scrub: Pour out the solution. Use a soft cloth or sponge to gently wipe the inside — scale should come away easily.
- Rinse thoroughly: Boil a full kettle of fresh water twice and discard it. This removes any vinegar taste or residue.
Descaling a Coffee Machine
The process varies slightly by machine type, but the core steps are the same:
- Check your manual first. Many modern machines have a dedicated descaling mode — use it if available.
- Prepare the descaling solution. Use a commercial descaler mixed to the manufacturer's recommended ratio, or a citric acid solution (typically 20g per litre of water).
- Run the descaling cycle. Pour the solution into the water reservoir and start the descaling programme. The machine will pump the solution through the internal boiler and pipes.
- Run rinse cycles. Refill the reservoir with fresh water and run 2–3 full cycles to flush out all traces of descaler.
- Clean removable parts. While descaling, wash the drip tray, portafilter, and water tank with warm soapy water.
How Often Should You Descale?
| Water Hardness | Kettle | Coffee Machine |
|---|---|---|
| Soft water | Every 4–6 months | Every 3–6 months |
| Moderately hard | Every 2–3 months | Every 2–3 months |
| Hard water | Monthly | Monthly |
Tips to Slow Limescale Buildup
- Use a water filter jug to fill kettles and machines where possible
- Empty and dry the kettle after each use — don't leave water sitting
- Fit a water softener if your home has very hard water
- Use filtered water in steam appliances whenever the manual allows
Regular descaling is one of those small habits that pays big dividends — your appliances last longer, perform better, and your coffee tastes the way it should.
